Family Lake Houses Within 2 Hours of Chicago

Published March 5, 2026 · Harbor on 23rd

Why Lake Geneva is the right answer for a multigenerational Chicago family trip — and what to look for in a rental that actually fits kids and grandparents.

The "somewhere with a beach that isn't a 6-hour drive" problem

Chicago families looking for a lake-house week have three real options: drive 5+ hours to Door County or Lake Michigan's east shore, drive 6+ hours to the Upper Peninsula, or go 90 minutes north to Lake Geneva. For most multigenerational groups — the "grandma, kids, dog, stroller, two cars" kind — the 90-minute option wins almost every time.

Here's what to look for in a Lake Geneva family rental, and why we built Harbor on 23rd the way we did.

What actually matters when the grandparents are coming too

Booking a family lake house is different from booking a couples weekend. After hosting dozens of multigenerational groups at Harbor on 23rd, here's what consistently separates "works great" from "OK but…":

1. Fenced backyard, not just a "backyard"

Toddlers do not stay where you put them. A fenced yard is the difference between "we'll just sit and watch the kids play" and "I'll be on supervision duty the whole time." Ask specifically — a lot of rentals say "yard" when they mean "a lawn with no edges."

2. First-floor bedroom

If a grandparent has bad knees, stairs are a deal-breaker on night 2. A ground-floor bedroom with a full bathroom nearby keeps everyone in the trip.

3. Bunk rooms for the cousins

Kids want to sleep together. Bunk rooms are a huge hit and they free up the master bedrooms for the adults. At Harbor on 23rd we have four sets of bunks plus three queens — the family config that works for ~4–6 kids + 6–8 adults.

4. Kitchen that can actually feed everyone

Breakfast and dinner for 10 people every day is the whole game on a family trip. You need: a real oven, a gas stove, counter space, a dishwasher, two refrigerators if possible, a real coffee maker, and dinnerware for kids. We learned this the hard way from our own early family trips.

5. Crib, toys, high chair, baby gear

If you're the parent of a one-year-old, the last thing you want to do is pack a pack-n-play into the trunk. A rental that keeps a crib and a basket of toys on-site takes the load off. (We keep both.)

6. Lake access — easy and safe

"Lake access" can mean anything from "private beach" to "there's a lake somewhere." Ask specifically whether it's walking distance, whether there's a lifeguard, and whether the beach is sandy or rocky. Harbor on 23rd is tied into the Lake Como association, which runs a clean sandy beach and a boat launch a short drive away.

7. Rainy-day plan

A week on the lake means at least one day of rain. A game room with a pool table, board games, HDTV with streaming, a puzzle on a coffee table — these are what save the trip.

Kid-friendly things to do in Lake Geneva

Beyond the house, Lake Geneva is packed with family activities within a short drive:

  • Riviera Beach — 600 feet of sandy public beach in downtown Lake Geneva, with lifeguards on duty through summer.
  • Lake Geneva Cruise Line — the iconic 2.5-hour US Mailboat Tour, where a "mail jumper" leaps from a moving boat to deliver mail to lakefront estates. One of the only active mailboat services in the country, and kids are riveted by the jumpers.
  • Mini golf and outdoor activities — several family entertainment spots in the Lake Geneva area offer mini golf and outdoor fun; ask locals for current recommendations.
  • Scoops Ice Cream — the post-beach tradition.
  • Yerkes Observatory — 15 minutes away in Williams Bay; a historic observatory on Geneva Lake with public programs and real telescopes.
  • Geneva Lake Shore Path — the roughly 21-mile walking path that borders the lake; the mile near Riviera Beach is perfect for young kids.

For a 4-day family trip, this is more than enough.

Drive times from Chicago neighborhoods

  • Downtown / Loop: 90 minutes
  • North Side (Lincoln Park, Lakeview): 80 minutes
  • West Side (Oak Park, Wicker Park): 90 minutes
  • South Side: 100 minutes
  • Suburbs (Evanston, Skokie, Northbrook): 60–80 minutes

No flights. No rental cars. No airport security with a toddler.

FAQ

What ages does the house work for? Infants through grandparents. We keep a crib and kid dinnerware on site, and there's a ground-floor bedroom + bathroom for anyone avoiding stairs.

Can we bring a dog? Not currently — the house is pet-free because of guest allergies. See the FAQ page for details.

How far is the beach? The Lake Como association beach is a short drive (under 10 minutes). Riviera Beach in downtown Lake Geneva is about 8 minutes.

Is there a washer/dryer? Yes — in-unit, because sandy-kid laundry is non-optional on family trips.
